Words become vectors

Since about 2013 there has been cheap machinery for turning words into a few hundred coordinates apiece, arranged so that words used in similar contexts sit near one another. The trick is called word2vec; the paper is Mikolov et al.

Directions carry meaning

The famous party trick: king − man + woman ≈ queen. Offsets behave like relations. Honesty, because this site runs on it: the benchmarks quietly exclude the input words, and the arithmetic works less often than the demo implies. Directions are real; their crispness is oversold.

Subtract the target

Take a slur; subtract its target. Repeat across the family. The residuals point — roughly, noisily, but unmistakably — the same way. That shared direction is the eigenslur: contempt with the target factored out.

Unspeakable, literally

The true eigenslur is a direction, not a token — no vocabulary item sits on the centroid. “The eigenslur that can be spoken is not the true eigenslur” is good poetry about a mean vector.

What it actually teaches

Contempt is low-rank.
Craft is full-rank.

Subtract the targets from the slurs and the residuals collapse onto one direction. Rank ≈ 1.

Subtract the particulars from skill and nothing collapses. No principal component. Full rank.

If the residuals share one direction, the target was contributing almost nothing — hate compresses. Competence doesn’t: there is no eigenweld, no eigenproof, no eigenrunbook. Destruction has a principal component. Construction doesn’t.

Why this address answers

In 2017, a Tumblr user named wunkolo dreamed of hopping forward through time in growing jumps until, jumping for the year 4000, they slammed into a time-dilation jail the American government had built in 3877. The rule: cross May 23 of that year, in either direction, and you are caught — which means it caught every long-range traveler in history, in one badly run facility. The reblogs found the loophole within hours: arrive on May 22, live through the 23rd like a person, carry on.

A viral word does to search traffic what that date does to time travelers — everyone moving from the joke toward the meaning crosses the same results page. Dates are unownable; a coined word has a deed available. So I bought the crossing.
